Volunteer With Chimpanzees

Discover the extraordinary experience of volunteering with chimpanzees - one of our closest animal relatives. With The Great Projects, you can support a chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa or join a chimpanzee trekking adventure in the wilds of Uganda. As a chimpanzee volunteer, you'll play a vital role in safeguarding and caring for these endangered creatures. At Chimp Eden - The Jane Goodall Institute, assist in rehabilitating chimps rescued from the grips of deforestation, poaching, and illegal wildlife trafficking. Your work will include preparing meals, crafting enrichment activities, and observing their intricate social behaviours to aid recovery. Alternatively, embark on our Ultimate Wildlife Tour in Uganda, where you'll participate in chimpanzee habituation efforts, helping prepare wild troops for essential wildlife research.

Volunteering with chimpanzees offers more than just the chance to work with animals - it's an opportunity to forge deep connections with them. Feel the exhilaration of hearing their playful calls, witnessing their complex interactions, and uncovering the unique personalities of each chimp. You'll create lasting memories while gaining a profound understanding of your role in protecting these remarkable animals. Start your journey today and contribute to a brighter future for chimpanzees in sanctuaries and the wild.

Chimpanzees are classified as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Their populations are declining across their natural range in Africa, with the estimated total population between 172,000 and 299,000 individuals. They face significant threats that make their conservation a critical priority.

Chimpanzees face numerous threats that endanger their survival, primarily caused by human activities:

  • Habitat Loss: Deforestation for agriculture, logging, mining, and infrastructure development is the most significant threat, shrinking their natural habitats and fragmenting populations.
  • Poaching: Chimps are hunted for bushmeat, the pet trade, or traditional medicine, often resulting in the killing of adults and the capture of young chimps.
  • Human-Wildlife Conflict: Expanding human settlements leads to conflicts over resources, with chimps sometimes killed to protect crops.
  • Disease Transmission: Close genetic similarity to humans makes chimps highly susceptible to human diseases, which can spread rapidly and devastate populations like Ebola.
  • Climate Change: Changing weather patterns and habitat conditions disrupt food availability and suitable living environments.
  • Illegal Wildlife Trade: Chimps are captured and sold as exotic pets or as entertainment 'props' despite international laws prohibiting this practice.

Conservation efforts, such as volunteering with chimps, habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, public education, and wildlife sanctuaries, are essential to mitigating these threats and ensuring the survival of chimpanzees in the wild.

There are opportunities to volunteer with chimpanzees at sanctuaries in Uganda, Congo, Kenya, Sierra Leone, South Africa, or Cameroon. With The Great Projects, you can volunteer in a chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa at Chimp Eden - The Jane Goodall Institute or be part of chimpanzee conservation efforts on the Ultimate Wildlife Tour in Uganda.
