Volunteer In Indonesia

A sprawling archipelago of over 18,000 islands, Indonesia offers countless opportunities for the intrepid explorer in which to 'get off the map'. Renowned as a world-class surfing and diving destination, Indonesia doesn't disappoint when it comes to its underwater life. With its coral coasts teeming with wildlife (including graceful manta rays and inquisitive turtles), this truly is an incredible destination. With its expanses of white sand and a seemingly endless azure ocean, Raja Ampat is perhaps the best place to explore Indonesia's waters, making Indonesia a truly brochure-worthy destination.

Back on land, Indonesia is still as fascinating. With its verdant rainforests, a backdrop of rolling vistas, powerful rivers and majestic mountainscapes, Indonesia is certainly an impressive location. From the lush jungles of Indonesian Borneo (resplendent with unique species of endemic wildlife) to the hustle and bustle of its cultural capital Jakarta, Indonesia its deserving of your time during any visit to South East Asia. Being a volunteer in Indonesia really gives you the chance to see a side of this incredible country that few others get to see, as well as enabling you to make a difference to the wildlife found here.

Wildlife

Wildlife

Trying to describe the amount of wildlife in Indonesia is akin to counting the stars in the sky…seriously, it would take a while, which is a huge reason why you should volunteer in Indonesia! With over 18,000 islands to explore, the animal and plant life in Indonesia is staggeringly diverse. Each region is home to varying habitats (and therefore a different set of animal life), but some of the more notable creatures include:

  • Orangutans
  • Elephants
  • Monkeys
  • The Komodo Dragon
  • Parrots
  • Sugar Gliders

As well as the wildlife on land, Indonesia has an abundance of it under the sea, too! The waters around the islands are home to rays, sharks, eels, and a huge variety of tropical fish, including the beloved clown fish. If tracking the animals on land becomes a little too much, all you’ve got to do is grab a snorkel and check out life under the sea!

Culture

Culture

Indonesian culture has been largely influenced by numerous other civilisations over the years and, as a result, is incredibly varied. It has been shaped by the interactions that the original indigenous people had with those who came to the islands later on, and there is a lot to learn about when you volunteer in Indonesia. This includes:

  • The art of 'silat;' a martial art which originated on the islands of Java and Sumatra. It is an art based around survival and is practiced throughout the archipelago.
  • The incredible history of the stone, bronze, and Iron Age arts that are still on show in the country.
  • The renowned architecture including the 'Rumah Gadan,' or traditional spire-roofed houses of the Minangkabau people.

Indonesia's culture has changed rapidly over the years, and will continue to do so with each new influence. Why not make your mark on this ever- changing country?
